I take an iPhone from being an expensive paperweight back to being a functioning smartphone.

So, a buddy of mine has an iPhone 3G, and He dropped it and wasted the glass on the front of the phone. The digitizer still worked for a while after that, but it eventually failed as well, and the phone was then retired to the shelf to gather dust.

I found some replacement glasses for iPhones online and decided to see if I could replace the glass myself, and my buddy was (obviously) keen, since a certain service provider quoted him R4500 to replace it. Yes, R4500. That’s about $615, or £405, for my international readers.

Anyway, here’s the busted phone:

So, I ordered the replacement screen from Honk Kong and the replacement adhesive from the US, and here’s everything on the table, ready for some work:

Removing the screen:

Screen removed:

Then I needed to remove the working LCD screen Module from the broken glass and digitizer:

After a few minutes with my Dremel Versatip, I had removed the glass:

After I had applied the new adhesive, I pulled out the beautiful new glass panel. I’m not an iPhone kinda guy, but this glass is sexy:

New glass applied!

Then I had to fit the LCD screen back in there:

That was basically it! All I had left to do was put it all back together!

Here’s the finished product:

Took me about 2 hours to do, but then again, I have never done this before. I’m sure I could pull it off in an hour max if I needed to do it again.

Anyway, that’s it. Nick got his phone back for a fraction of what his Service Provider wanted to charge him (see what I did there?).

If you iPhone’s busted, drop me an email. I’ll fix it for you.

Some updates to the NAG project I'm working on. Alu, 7" Monitors, etc

I’ve been so busy lately, and I’ve not posted the updates here as I post them up to the NAG website. Sorry about that, guys.

Anyway, here’s a quick summary with some pics and links to the last updates.

My girlfriend’s a photographer, so we took the case into the photography studio where she works (PixelPro Photography) and took some photo of the case and PSU. It all turned out REALLY well!

She photographed the PSU for me as well:

I spent some time drawing up some renders and designs of the case in 3D, and this is what I came up with:

And then the 3D renders:

You can read that full article here.

Then I had a new toy arrive from the US:

More details and the full update here.

And then I did some alu work for the motherboard tray:

There’s also a wealth of info there, so please do check that post out. You can read it here.

Dremel recently sent me another new toy, the Dremel 4000. Let's have a look!

I’m fortunate enough to be under full sponsorship from Dremel. They supply me with whatever Dremel tools I need, and this helps me SO much with my modding. Having access to such wonderful tools all the time, and having access to new ones when I need those is nothing short of fantastic.

I recently got a box in the mail containing a brand new toy – the Dremel 4000. This is one of those tools that just look so, so good. I’ve done a few hours of work with it since it arrived as well, and I love it!

Some photos:

The Dremel in all its glory with the accessories that it comes with

A close up of some of the accessories:

The Dremel also ships with the SpeedClic attachment. I personally love these!

I’ll be launching a full Tools section on the website soon, and I’ll be sure to do a full write up of the Dremel 4000 in that section of the site.

Big big thanks to Dremel for hooking me up with this 4000 series. I really appreciate all the support I get from Dremel!

Some work on the inner cover. Looks pretty good so far.

I want the case to look really good inside. Sure, I could mod the hardware in there and just close it up, but I want it all to look really good inside, so I’m doing a couple of things. First and foremost, I’m making a cover for the inside. Let me elaborate:

Here’s the case:

I want to do something like this, but a full piece. Please note, the piece in the photos is just a rough draft of the idea I have:

So, I set out to start. Some plexi I had lying around:

Taped up and marked for cutting. Don’t worry, I know what’s going on there

I sanded some of the stuff using one of my Dremels fixed to the Multi-Vise:

I then found that the holes in the plexi were slightly too short, so I needed a solid way to lengthen them:

Looks pretty good!

Making progress:

I also had to get this hunk of plastic out of the way:

Voila!

For interest sake – I use a variation of sanding bands for this work. I tend to start off with a 60 Grit and then finish off with a 120. I also have two different sizes of bands in case I’m working on something small. Here, you’ll see the 60 on the left, and the 120 on the right. These are the small bands:

I use the bigger ones too:

I’m pretty well stocked up on these things too. I use them quite a lot, so I need lots

So, this is where I am with the panel now. It’s almost done with the first stage of its work. Lots to go still:

I’ve actually done a whole lot more work, updates to follow!

Welcome to the new home of DAE_JA_VOO

Surprise! Brand new website! Man, this is a LONG overdue update.

Let me start off by saying a HUGE thanks to Johan from Advanced creation Media for developing the last site for me. I loved that site! The site needed to be upgraded though; I wanted a new look, I wanted social integration, I wanted a whole new home on the net for my work. After much research, I ended up going for it on my own, no sponsors for the site or anything, and I’m really amped with the result. Elitehost is still sponsoring the hosting (I had another host offer me a hosting sponsor, but I’m happy here with Elitehost), so big big thanks to them.

Let’s briefly walk through the site:

Home!

I ended up going with this layout and style for the home because I felt it to be perfect. There are a million ways to do these things, but this is just what I wanted.

Now, the site’s got some nifty little features that I’d love for you to take advantage of. First and foremost is the commenting system. You now have the chance to comment on every single article or update I post, and you can do so without even signing up!

One of the biggest things for me with this new site was the need for social integration. What I wanted was a way for you, as the reader of my work, to go ahead and post this stuff to facebook or twitter with ease. I’ve also included facebook’s new “Like” button, and in clicking that, you’ll be linking to this article on facebook and showing it to your friends. I’ve added this like button to both the top and the bottom of each page so as to make it easier for you to access it. Go ahead and click it right now!

I’ve made twitter a big part of DAE_JA_VOO now as well, and I’ve started posting updates while I mod!

So if you’d like to keep up with me in real-time, go ahead and follow @dae_ja_voo, or click the twitter button at the top of the page:

Something else that was really important for me was RSS. I’m a big fan of RSS feeds, so I’ve supplied you, as the reader, with an RSS feed, which you can access by clicking the RSS button at the top. Subscribing to this RSS feed will give you instant access to my updates:

I’m in the process of creating a facebook page as well, so keep an eye out for that!

I’ve got LOADS more content to put up on the site. All the guides that were on the site before will be put up again, but with new photos and so on. I can’t have such an awesome looking site with bad photos, right?

Anyway, that’s it. Please let me know what you think. I’ve put many hour of work into getting this site upgraded, and I’m pretty happy with the result. I’ll be launching a forum again soon. I hope that this forum will become the home of South African Case Modders. Maybe we can even run some competitions!

That’s it!

Ett

The biggest project of my life.

This is year at RAGE, alongside the Dream Machine that NAG gives away every year, they’ll be giving away yet another MONSTER of a PC. That machine will be like no other, it’ll be entirely customised. NAG has asked me to mod and build that system. They’ve given me freedom on the setup, freedom on budget, freedom on design. They told me I could use any setup I like – any case, any PSU, any theme, etc. As you can imagine, this sparks a million ideas in the mind of a case modder, as these things usually hold us back. You could have amazing ideas for a mod, but can’t afford the R4000 for a top-end case. Fortunately, none of those issues are a concern for me… I really feel blessed to have this freedom!

Anyway, the case I ended up deciding on going with was the Lian Li PC-A77F. This case was only released overseas on the 23rd of March, and they only landed in SA a week ago, so this should be the first one on the desk of an end-user in South Africa! Furthermore, this will be the first A77F case mod on the planet! So that’s pretty exciting as well!

For the PSU, I opted to go for a Corsair HX1000W PSU. 1000W… you could power a small fishing village with that!

Both the case and PSU have arrived, and I was blown away by the case. I’ve been the proud, proud owner of the Lian-Li PC-V2000B Plus for about 2 years, and I love the case, but it’s been boxed up for a mod, so I’ve forgotten how amazing Lian-Li cases are. When I opened the box of this A77F, I was in awe of the quality. It’s really something to experience. So I took the case and PSU to the studio to have some photos taken. For this post, I’m giving you a single photo of each.

The case:

The PSU:

Photos taken by Pixel Pro Photography/Ophra Watson. Big big thanks to them for hooking me up with studio time!

Anyway, I just wanted to announce this mod here. Updates are on their way!

I met with Dremel again and officially signed with them. At the end of the meeting, I was handed a catalog and told “Drop me an email with a list of what you want”. That’s exactly what I did, and man, they sent me absolutely everything I wanted. Heck, they even sent me a 400 series Dremel, and I didn’t even ask for one (I love my 300 Series). Apparently there’s a 4000 series with my name on it too!

Anyway, here’s what they sent me:
